Digital Guardian Angel: Active Safety for Pedestrians and Light Vehicles

Summary

The connection to the digital live traffic twin increases the safety of vulnerable road users (VRUs) and light vehicles in road traffic. The Guardian Angel app is launched on an integrated tablet in the bio-hybrid vehicle E-Jet. This not only visualizes the digital image of the traffic twin, but also actively warns in dangerous situations.

State of the Art

Previous approaches to connecting vulnerable road users (VRUs) to a cooperative intelligent transport system (C-ITS) always required dedicated hardware. Both direct communication between road users (VRUs) and vehicles and a cloud-based connection have been tested.

Technological Innovations

The Guardian Angel only requires vulnerable road users (VRUs) to have a smartphone that is directly connected to the digital twin. A dedicated backend processes all available data in real time and generates precise warnings based on this – without any additional hardware requirements. This effectively increases the safety of road users (VRUs) without having to expand their technical equipment.
